Gramophone Artist of The Year 2006
Considered “nothing less than the pianist who will define Bach performance on the piano for years to come?(Stereophile), Angela Hewitt is today’s most sought-after interpreter of the German composer’s priceless legacy. This enduring love affair, which sprung from the time when she would hear Bach’s intricate pieces played on her father’s church organ, has grown into a long lasting and fruitful relationship.
Apart from her numerous concerts with the finest orchestras and throughout the world’s paramount concert halls, the Canadian pianist has been fully dedicated to the eleven year project of recording all the major keyboard works of Bach for Hyperion Records. All albums were immensely acclaimed by public and critics alike, with Gramophone magazine not only praising all of her releases, but also naming her the artist of the year in 2006.
Angela Hewitt is now celebrating her remarkable endeavour with a 14-month worldwide concert tour devoted to the eternal music of the German composer, a tour that the Macao audience and the Cultural Centre are privileged to be part of. In the city’s piano recital, patrons will have the unique chance of spending an evening with the “Bach pianist of our time " (The Guardian), witnessing her playing the entire Book I of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier by memory, in an unforgettable experience which is as uncommon as it is moving.
Well-Tempered Clavier , Book I
24 Preludes and Fugues, BWV846-869
Johann Sebastian Bach’s first volume of the Well-Tempered Clavier from 1722 has become a cornerstone for any aspiring pianist. Comprised of 12 pairs of preludes and fugues covering every major and minor key of the chromatic scale, Bach’s varied keyboard-writing was not just a pedagogical tool for musicians but also an efficient introduction to the then-new system of equal temperament, under which composers gained considerable flexibility in modulating into different keys within a given piece and thus explore the full palette of chromatic harmonies. Although the fugues have become great tools in teaching structure and counterpoint, the works transcend any didacticism through their emotional range and intellectual depth.
Programme length is approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes including a 30 minutes intermission. Latecomers will only be admitted at a proper timing to avoid disruption of the programme.
