CCM Art Project "Artist in Residence" 2006 Starts now!

Makoto Matsushima, the professional dancer from Japan who is closely linked to the stage of Macao, has accepted the invitation to be the Artist in Residence of MCC! Since 2000, Makoto has been continuously collaborating with the local dancers. This year, to take a further step, he takes the identity as the Artist in Residence and will introduce his original form of performance, “Fight Me Now!" Different dance professionals from different part of the world will be presented in each round as the guest tutors and hold with him together a series of improvisation workshops and demonstrations. The local dancers can expect the new impacts from the introduction of different dance genres.
For the first Round of “Fight Me Now!" Makoto, together with Michael Schumacher from Netherlands, the expert in “Contact Improvisation" will host 3 improvisation workshops and 3 open demonstrations of different features. Come and enjoy the glamour of Improvisation!
Workshop A. Movement, Voice and Improvisation(Instructor: Makoto Matsushima, Michael Schumacher)
By promoting a greater awareness of relationship between sensory input and the environment, the performer can better be equipped to realize each moment's potential for composition. Throughout the workshop, participants will explore a process by which they collectively experience and spontaneously created compositions.
Workshop B. Movement and Voice (Instructor: Makoto Matsushima)
The aim of this workshop is to explore and develop the voice and body movement as the basis of improvisation.
Workshop C. Improvisation and Instant Composition (Instructor: Michael Schumacher)The aim of this workshop is to experience and gain the knowledge of improvisation, thus to come to the possibility of composition.

Artist in Residence
Makoto Matsushima is the core member of internationally acclaimed Japanese dance theatre company PAPPA TARAHUMARA, and participating in every production of the company as one of the main performers and designers. He recently exerts himself to his own choreographies and is working intensively in Europe and Hong-Kong for new solo pieces and collaborations. To name some of his most impressive works performed in Macao: “Kyoku"2001), “Lost and Found"2001) and “Ship in View"2004).
Guest Tutor
Michael Schumacher gains the B.F.A. in Dance from the Juilliard School, New York. He has been the principal dancer of the top dance groups like Ballet Frankfurt and Twyla Tharp of New York, and has collaborated with the big names in dance like Sylvie Guilliem. Schumacher continues to perform with an Amsterdam based collective of improvisers, Magpie Music Dance Company, and other independent artists around the world. In addition to performing, he conducts workshops in movement analysis and improvisation techniques.
