三道菜式，三個故事，各自成章卻同時互相牽連，成了這部描述北京眾生相的黃瓜。才40開外的老陳因為性無能，妻子背夫偷漢也只能有苦自己知；25歲的小陳滿懷理想，電影系畢業後希望當導演，夢想卻被無情現實殘酷粉碎；賣青瓜的農民老陳生活艱苦，一心希望努力賺錢，讓兒子將來考上大學，脫離貧困。內地新進導演周耀武，以寫實筆觸道盡北京老百姓的生活實況。同一個世界，從來都不只有同一個夢想。

 

Da Chen e a sua mulher vendem, ilegalmente, vegetais à beira da estrada na esperança de assim fazerem dinheiro para mandarem o filho para uma universidade em Pequim. Xiao Chen, um realizador em dificuldades, está desempregado e a sua namorada Cocoa torna-se numa prostituta para sobreviver. Também desempregado, Lao Chen é impotente, e consome afrodisíacos para recuperar a sua virilidade, não sabendo do caso amoroso da sua mulher. Três famílias chinesas com as suas histórias representadas por três pratos chineses todos eles com um ingrediente em comum: o PEPINO. As suas lutas e o seu sofrimento, a sua humanidade e a sua impotência reflectem-se neste vegetal comum.

 

Da Chen and his wife sell vegetables illegally on the roadside, and hope to send their son to a Beijing university. Struggling filmmaker Xiao Chen is unemployed, and his girlfriend Cocoa becomes a prostitute to survive. Also unemployed, Lao Chen is impotent and consumes aphrodisiacs to regain his virility, while ignoring his wife’s affair. Three Chinese families, their stories represented by three Chinese dishes, all connected by a single ingredient: the CUCUMBER. Their struggles and sufferings, their humanity and helplessness can all be seen through this common, ordinary vegetable.
