Nature demands to be understood, protected and respected by humans, as we have constantly benefited and learned from our mother earth. The natural world has always been an inspiration for artists, from the likes of Antonio Vivaldi, who composed the Four Seasons concerto, to the impressionist master Claude Monet, a passionate observer of light changes and shadows he often transposed to his gardens and landscape paintings. Besides art, science also had a lot to learn from nature. Did you know that, while observing the sky, astronomers have found that other galaxies are moving further away from us? and the further they are, the faster they move, which is the core idea behind the Big Bang theory on the origin of the Universe.
On a smaller scale, those of us growing and living in the city, studying and working is mostly confined between cold, concrete walls. How much time each day do we really spend observing changes in our surroundings? Do we ever take a closer look at the planet that nurtures us? If we don’t, it is probably time to take our children for a hike or a short sailing trip. That is, any kind of experience that will allow the curious tiny minds to play, enjoy the fresh air and lift their spirits, providing them with an opportunity to be in contact with nature. Just like writers, artists and scientists, who are constantly inspired by earths’ gifts, children may explore its numerous possibilities, be it in their surroundings or within themselves.
Inspired by the times spent with her own children hiking the Austrian forests, choreographer Wendy Choi
joined hands with local producer Chan Si Kei and local choreographer Annette Ng. Together they created Sweet
Dream in the Woods, a new baby theatre conceived to raise the importance of respecting and spending time
with nature. This interactive experience is specially designed for tots under 15 months old, and it will
take kids on a blissful theatrical journey of movement, aromas and textures. Dancing under a giant white
tent, two performers interact with the audience, guiding them to explore the four seasons in the magical
“woods”, a wonderful scenery filled with mystical plants and wild creatures. Stimulated by live music
created and performed by local musician Lobo Ip using instruments, from the handpan and ocarina to the
Indian drum, the babies will find themselves immersed in nature sounds, a breath-taking experience not to be
missed.
Taken by their own senses to explore this place, kids and parents may sit down to feel
each breath of our mother Earth. From the hot colourful summer to the freezing white winter, from the sound
of a water stream to the tunes of humming birds, breathing in the delicate scent of flowers and the smell of
wet grass, let’s take a moment to pay attention - we will be surprised.
