Wang Baochuan, the daughter of Prime Minister Wang Yun, lived a modest life after marrying Xue Pinggui, a begger, against her father’s will. However, 18 years after being sent to the battlefield and trapped in an enemy camp by the treacherous Prime Minister, Pinggui manages to escape, returning with his own forces to defeat Wang Yun, take the throne and finally make his wife the new empress.

This well-known tragic tale describes the downfall of Xiang Yu, the lord of Western Chu, in the face of military defeat. When his concubine Yuji realizes Xiang’s army is besieged by Liu Bang’s forces, desperate not to become a burden, she commits suicide after one last dance for her beloved. Devastated with sorrow, Xiang Yu escapes, breaking through the siege, only to kill himself at the bank of the Wu River.
