Revisiting ancient arts, Dongpo: Life in Poems is a lyrical dance exploring the traditional Chinese aesthetics with a contemporary verve. Inspired on the life and writings of Song dynasty’s poet Su Dongpo, this contemplative, modern performance was conceived by the acclaimed choreographer and visual creator Shen Wei incorporating a multiplicity of artistic expressions. From visual effects and calligraphy to painting and tai chi, moving beyond historic precision, it conveys emotions and conflicts, travelling across the poet’s world. The dancers move in synchronized, fluid motion, impelled by the sounds of the guqin and contemporary music, a soothing dialogue conceived by the leading Chinese-French composer Chen Qigang.
Recipient of a MacArthur Foundation grant and of numerous distinctions, Shen Wei devised this stylized vision in collaboration with the China Oriental Performing Arts Group. Devoted to the diffusion of contemporary performing arts since its inception, the group has presented works across the country with great acclaim. Elsewhere, the company has thrived on prestigious venues, from New York’s Lincoln Centre to other iconic stages across continents.
