Two evenings of traditional galore
Performing arts lovers are in for an entertaining treat with yet another string of stories immersed in history, love and intrigue, brought to CCM stage by the National Peking Opera Company.
The programme takes-off with Yang Silang Visits His Mother, a jewel work telling the story of a family reunited during war time. When Yang Yanhui (Yang Silang), the fourth son of the Yang family, is taken by the enemies from Qidan Kingdom, he ends up marrying Tiejing, the kingdom’s princess. 15 years later, Yang Yanhui learns that his mother is coming to the war front. Longing to see her, he will count on his wife’s secret help to prepare the long-awaited reunion.
On the second evening, the company will perform excerpts of The Cosmos Sword, a piece bringing us a story depicting a feud between two political blocs during the Qin Dynasty that ruins the happy marriage of a young couple. Featuring Writing a Petition, Feigned Madness and Golden Palace, the climactic scenes involve a variety of virtuosic singing and complex dance movements. On the same show, patrons will enjoy another set of vignettes from Reconciliation Between the general and the Prime Minister, namely Blocking the Way of the Prime Minister, Bearing the Rod and Asking for Punishment and Reconciliation. This classic is especially challenging for the performers, featuring the intelligent and diplomatic prime minister Lin Xiangru alongside the proud and courageous general Lian Po.
Founded in 1955, born from the dedication of Mei Lanfang, the National Peking Opera Company is acclaimed both at home and abroad. Macao has regularly enjoyed the troupe’s vast repertoire over the last few years, and on their return, keeping up with tradition, the company brings us yet another exciting series of classic operas, showcasing this much-treasured cultural heritage.
