Contemporary Erhu master George Gao is a versatile musician, a performer, composer, music producer and an instrument inventor, who created a new type of Erhu, the Erhu Shaoqin, (with better sound at the higher part of the strings), which has broadened the development of the Erhu art, stunned the music circles, and received much praise.
Gao was a Gemini Award nominated in Canada and the The Blood of Yingzhou District, a documentary for which he wrote and performed the music, won an Oscar for Best Documentary (Short Subjects). His work Erhu Capriccio No. 2 – Mongolian Fantasy has been universally acknowledged as an Erhu classic and is frequently used as a set piece for major Erhu competitions.
