When Brahms composed this concerto, his ideal soloist was his friend, the famous violinist Joseph Joachim, who composed the cadenza for the first movement. Therefore, this concerto requires extremely high technical skills from the violin solo. Josef Špaček, the Czech contemporary violin soloist, will collaborate with Lio Kuokman in Macao again to perform this masterpiece, known as one of the “World’s Four Greatest Violin Concertos”. Some call Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 his “Pastoral” Symphony: the opening horn calls evoke the serenity of Pörtschach, the district in Austria where he stayed when he wrote this work. In contrast to the Sturm und Drang (“storm and strife”) of his Symphony No. 1, we see a completely different side of the composer.
