A concerto soloist also conducting the orchestra is a marvel to behold. And when the same person then takes the baton to lead a Mahler symphony, it’s an occasion not to be missed. Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, imbued with jazz rhythms, has a serene and folk-like middle movement standing in sharp contrast to its rhythmically-driven outer movements. Gustav Mahler’s “Titan” is intimately connected with a concurrent work, Songs of a Wayfarer. Two of the themes from the song cycle appear in the symphony, along with Frère Jacques in minor key, making the piece rich with imageries and external references. Mahler later said, “A symphony must be like the world. It must contain everything.” His Symphony No. 1 marks the beginning of Mahler’s musical universe.
