Centre for the Preservation and Transmission of the Cultural Heritage of the Palace Museum in Macao
In order to strengthen the conservation, restoration and educational promotion of cultural heritage in Macao, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region signed the Memorandum of Cooperation on the Establishment of the “Centre for the Preservation and Transmission of the Cultural Heritage of the Palace Museum in Macao” to jointly build the “Centre for the Preservation and Transmission of the Cultural Heritage of the Palace Museum in Macao” (hereafter referred to as “the Centre”), with the Palace Museum being responsible for professional advice and technical support for the restoration of Macao’s cultural heritage.
Located on the ground floor of the Macao Museum of Art, the Centre covers a total area of around 900 square metres and is equipped with specialised laboratories for the restoration of cultural heritage and exhibition spaces, being prepared to carry out works related to the preservation and restoration of Macao's World Heritage sites, classified immovable properties and components of built heritage, elevating cultural heritage preservation standards through advanced technology and the strengthening of local heritage restoration talents.
In the future, this Centre will serve as a new platform for multilateral collaboration and technical exchange in the field of restoration of local cultural relics, thus contributing to further improve the preservation and restoration standards of the city’s cultural heritage.
The Forbidden City Architecture Conservation Exhibition is taking place in the Centre’s exhibition space, from December 17, 2024, to November 9, 2025. It features 19 exhibits/displays on loan from the Palace Museum, with a focus on the Forbidden City’s woodworks, glass objects, paintings, glazed enamel elements and interior decorations. These architectural components have great historical significance and reflect an important combination of the palace’s construction techniques and art, serving to illustrate the different professional skills involved in the preservation and restoration of built heritage.
