Timeless Love Gone Radical
Experience the thrills of young love in a dazzling new vision of a Shakespeare classic. Matthew Bourne’s Romeo and Juliet is a scintillating dance-theatre, masterfully retelling an immortal tale of forbidden passion and discovery.
Speaking straight at contemporary audiences, Bourne launches on stage an exquisite group of fluent dancers who compellingly revive the well-known tragic story of two lovers risking everything to be together, defying social conformism. Premiered in 2019, this boisterous adaptation swiftly garnered international acclaim. Danced to Prokofiev’s rearranged music score, the piece takes us into unexpected directions as the play’s city setting is turned into a mental hospital called Verona Institute. One of many twists that have become the British choreographer’s trademark. Dubbed as “the peerless master of popular dance theatre”, he has been a prolific ballet creator and choreographer for musicals, theatre and television since the 1980’s. Honoured with Tony and Olivier awards for edgy reinterpretations of classics like Swan Lake or The Nutcracker, his work has been changing perceptions, breaking boundaries in the world of dance.
As with many of Bourne’s previous works, this creation is a brilliant outpour of contemporary dance and bold imagination. From balletomanes to those who are simply passionate about stage arts, everyone will be stunned by this ingenious choreographic phenomenon!
